Jo Crotty calls for more local control to safeguard police numbers

Fri 19th Sep 2008

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Warrington South Councillor Jo Crotty has called for greater local control over police funding to put a stop to any future threat of cuts in officers. Speaking at her party's national conference in Bournemouth Dr Crotty said, "The best people to set local police priorities are the local police along with local councils and other key local stakeholders. The best people to set budgets are local police authorities who understand the issues on the ground, and the best people to decide on police funding are local police authorities who know the best way to spend the money."

Jo Crotty to call for the threat of Warrington police cuts to be lifted

Wed 10th Sep 2008

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Warrington South Councillor Jo Crotty will call for more police funding for Warrington at her party's conference next week. "At conference I will be pushing for policies that call for more police funding," said Dr Crotty. "This year Warrington and Cheshire nearly lost 120 police officers. This was because the Labour Government gave us the lowest possible police funding increase - well below most measures of inflation. They even threatened to block local attempts to close the funding gap. It is solely down to local initiative that our officers are not being cut and we can pay for improvements such as the new Town Centre Policing Unit."

Quote of the Week

"It sounds to me like I should vote for Vince Cable. Vince Cable was against demutualising the building societies back in the 1990s when your government was doing that. Vince Cable was sending me as an economics editor emails every three weeks, about the levels of debt through the last five years and he has been instrumental in saying that the taxpayer needs to be protected nationalising the banks and in having the upside risks as well as the downside ones are the way to go."
